  The Kang Kang chain of restaurants is likely the #1 CHEAP EATS in the SG Valley, or even the entire LA!  But what earned them this good review is the decent quality of food - if you go at the right time, that is.
  
  Many wrote about their Shanghai pan fried buns. What I like is their many readymade dishes that you can choose, mix and match to create your own boxed meal. For $6-7 you get a packed box of protein and vegetables of your choice, plus a bowl of white rice. Super convenient for busy working class or anyone who is pressed for time , or simply too lazy to cook.
  
  They have a huge menu so there's never any lack of choices. Drink menu is pretty amazing too. Their boba drink size is bigger than many other places. But above all, their low price and GREAT VALUE is the main reason many cu
  
  *** They also have bags of frozen dumplings for sale. More expensive than the ones sold in supermarkets but the QUALITY AND SIZE are superb!!!  Highly recommend this.
  
  The only thing to avoid, if you're here to buy the readymade dishes, is the time outside of meal periods - like 3pm, for example. Foods may not be fresh and some even a bit stale.
  
  Great parking lot right behind. Street parking is often easy to find.

  Where else can you get a meal for 2 under $8.  I feel so full and it was honestly delicious.  There is street and parking in the back.   You can enter from the front or back.  There is a lot of seating and a freezer with frozen wontons and baos.  
  
  There is also a menu of fresh food prepped to order including the buns they are famous for.  I've tried their Dan Dan mien which is good but on the spicier and saltier side. Their shaved ice is decent but ok (cheap!). I usually get a combo especially their 4 item combo to share.  The styrofoam box is overfilled and there is a bowl of rice on the side and a small bowl of soup.  The spoons with black handles show which ones are vegetarian friendly.

  Shanghai Pan Fried Buns are really good, about $1 a piece but you order them in an order of 8 or something and you should call ahead or else you have to wait.
  
  I had some of the meat dishes in their lunch boxes and the meat was higher quality compared to Oriental Express Cafe but it was a little dried out like it had been out and heated too long and I also wasn't a huge fan of the taste. I'll stick with the buns only from here.

  Had this place bookmarked for quite some time.  Glad we finally had a chance to try!  Wish we came earlier but we just finished watching the Warriors sweep the Trailblazers.  
  
  Anyway. This review is really only for the two things we tried.  Shanghai Pan Fried Buns and The Taiwanese Zhong Zi (Chinese Tamale).
  
  The pan fried buns were quite ginormous.  The bottoms are perfectly crispy!  Careful when taking a bite so the juices don't squirt everywhere.  Take a small bite, sip the broth, and enjoy. Be careful. It's HOT & JUICY!
  
  Taiwanese zhong zi. Oh my goodness. This is exactly what I have been looking for!  I am Chinese and grew up in the Philippines. My mom would make these glutinous rice wrapped in banana leaves. These triangular things are filled w pork that has a little fat, and mushrooms. Peanut and lap cheung optional. The secret to great tasting zhong zi is that the rice is cooked w soy sauce and other flavoring before it is wrapped. And this is how Kang Kang has it. I'm so happy!!!  I haven't found anything like this in the Bay Area. They are usually that Cantonese style which I do not care for.
  
  My husband and I shared these two orders and it was perfect.
  
  PS - the ladies behind the counter doesn't speak a lot of English but it's cool. They're friendly and service was good. Generous portions and inexpensive.

  Stop what you're doing. The only thing you want to go get right now are the Shanghai Buns here.
  
  In my relatively short lifespan I've had homemade dumplings/buns by a Chinese person, twice. These Shanghai bums reminded me of my childhood when I'd go over to my friend's house just to have her mom's homemade food. YES IT'S THAT GOOD.
  
  Think juicy, meaty and HOT. (Temperature) It's a food court style, meaning you go up to the register and order your food and then pay. CASH ONLY. They then bring the food out to you. They'll also give you free tea or water.
  
  The Shanghai Buns are FILLING and worth it.
  Can they please ship this to NYC so I can eat it everyday????
